Abstract: The paper presents the results of literature searches and field work carried out by the research team of Brazilian Archaeology Center. During the colonial period of Brazil, Rio de Janeiro was a center for production of sugar which was exported to Europe by the government. The sugar cane fields outstretched by the North and West of the current city of Rio de Janeiro. Go back to that time the names of diverse neighborhoods like Engenho da Rainha, Engenho Novo, Engenho de Dentro, Engenho Velho, which, however is what remains of this long period of economic history of Rio de Janeiro. Only the building of a farm called the Capão do Bispo, located at Avenida Don Helder Camara, in Del Castilho, remains standing until the present day. Despite the importance of heritage and being listed by Historical Patrimony, in practice little has been done by the government to preserve this relic of an important period in the history of Rio de Janeiro. Certainly the lack of public policies for preservation of historic and prehistoric heritages answers for this situation. Actually not just being listed, it is necessary to preserve. by VANESSA M.C.R.FRANCISCO ET AL.2011, ANAIS, CBA, RJ
